Corrections Association of Texas supports Ms. Kimberly Ross Eaton and we are asking every one to vote on or before the vote closes on Friday, July 13, 2007 in favor of Ms. Kimberly Ross Eaton. Results will be certified by Friday, July 27, 2007.

Kimberly Ross Eaton and Don Green in runoff for ERS Trustee election

VOTE NOW!  In support of Ms. Kimberly Ross Eaton

A runoff election will be held for the vacancy on the ERS Board of Trustees. A runoff is necessary because neither candidate received more than 50% of the votes in the general election. Five individuals ran for the position on the ERS Board. Don Green and Kimberly Ross Eaton were the top two vote-getters and will be in the runoff election. Election results were certified at a special meeting on May 11. The results of the election are as follows:

Candidate

Votes

Percentage

Don Green

12,357

41.73%

Kimberly Ross Eaton

 7,590

25.63%

C.A.T. GOES TO AUSTIN

The votes are in and while the results could have been better it's a start.  The silver lining is we've learned a lot from this experience and as a result of our educational experience next session our goal is to strive for a better grade. Now the grades:

State employees receive a modest bump in their paychecks.  The House and the Senate negotiators agreed to give state employees a 2 percent increase starting this fall and anther 2 percent the following year. The $153 billion budget increases spending by about 7 percent over current levels, although it is abut 9 percent larger than the budget approved at this time in 2005.  Budgets often grow between legislative sessions when the federal government sends more money to Texas than expected or, as in 2006, lawmakers come back in for a special session and decided to spend more.  The new budget "is very generous in many areas", said Senate Finance Committee Chairman Steve Ogden.  "in many areas, it addresses problems that the state has needed addressed for a long time.  It's still balanced, the state can afford it and I hope people vote for it."

Highlights of May 22 ERS Board Meeting are as follows:

NO co-payment changes or HMO changes expected *Some rates will increase; others will decrease* Re-enrollment in TexFlex will be automatic* Disability insurance raters remain unchanged, but short-term benefit increases* Life and disability contract awarded to Fort Dearborn Life

Corrections Association Of Texas (CAT) turns up heat on Legislators

Members once again invite employees to Austin to lobby for change

 BY: Tim Williams, Backgate Webstaff

CATNEW1.gif  When I met up with the organization called CAT somewhere back around 4 years ago, no one was sure of which direction they would be headed in the years to come. There was talk of them being just another organization that had no power to change anything within TDCJ, and was not really respected among the elite in Huntsville at the time.

The Corrections Association Of Texas has come along way over the years, and is now one of the top respected TDCJ staff organizations in Texas. Backed by the AFL-CIO, CAT ,who was thought to just serve region 3 back then, has extended it's reach statewide. They are taking on new members, and are organizing at the grass roots level to lobby for the rights of every  TDCJ employee.

Sam Davis , who is himself a long time TDCJ employee in the Houston areas' region 3, heads up the organization as it's current president. "Sam takes his business seriously" said one member of CAT. "He actually cares what happens to TDCJ employees." Cat is now on the forefront of Texas legislative lobbying for TDCJ employees, helping to pass several bills that have assisted TDCJ employees. Of those bills, one actually put money in the employees' pockets.

We have seen a lot of organizations that claim to represent TDCJ employees come and go, but CAT is the only one we  have actually followed long enough to make a conclusion. CAT is the real deal. And we would not profile them here if we didn't actually know that.

CAT is once again organizing a bus trip to the Texas capitol set for April 18th 2007. They will depart from the region 3 training academy parking lot at 9am. Cost was not specified. For more information, contact Sam Davis, or Rachel Lee at: PHONE: 1-888-522-8839
